REMEMBER

Most of us call ourselves Christian, yet I get the distinct impression we give little thought to what that means. We take from the Bible what fits our ideology, and leave the rest. The Jewish people fled Egypt, freeing themselves from the corruption of the Pharaoh and his system of scarcity (little food, little family time, 18 hr workdays,m little justice). The Jewish people fled to Sinai, the Promised Land, and received rules to be to be guided by (The Ten Commandments). They were to pay homage to God, be good neighbors, and take a little time off from those 18-hour workdays. It was no longer necessary for you to struggle to feed yourself and your family, God would provide, which didn't mean you were to sit around and pray for the best, but to give thanks for the bounty that was possible through your hard work, devotion, and commitment to community building. As it happened, Christ entered the picture and challenged hierarchy of the Jewish leaders, who he believed had strayed from the promise. Challenging those in power is never a good thing, as we have found out many times through the years. Anyway, Christ emphasized the common good, being a good neighbor, and devotion to God,m not man. As Christians, we were moved from a place of bondage, scarcity, submission, and blind obedience, to a place of abundance, hope, freedom, the common good, and the promise of community and neighborhood. All we need to do is remember.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF WORDS

 CONTEMPLATION

Flying in a six-seat Cessna at 8,000 ft. on a clear night can be an exhilarating experience. What a sense of freedom and escape. Looking at all the lit-up towns is truly fascinating. Small patches of 50, 1000, 5000 lights. Single lights off in an isolated nowhere. Imagine, under all those lights, the stories people could tell: fathers trying to teach their sons how to be a good man; a wife wondering why she married an abusive man; daughters yet to be married; grandchildren being spoiled by their grandma and grandpa; careers yet to be realized. Births, deaths, town heroes, town whores, lovers of life, killers of hope. Things beautiful and thoughts ugly flood into my mind. The plane turns dark, except for the lights below and the zillions of stars above. An unending spectacle of wonder. The constellations look like they are alive. The Milky Way, pouring out its miracle elixir. Orion, ready to do battle with evil. The North Star, about to get a new job. It will need to guide us home. The regulator on the plane is out. The instrument panel is black. There is no way to know if the landing gear went down or not.  It is a pity such a beautiful night ends with such bad news.

4. THE ROLLING STONES HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE MOST DURABLE AND SUCCESSFUL BANDS IN ROCK AND ROLL HISTORY. PICKING A FAVORITE SONG IS AGAIN NOT EASY. I HAVE TO GO WITH "WILD HORSES" AND "YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT."
5. IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO APPRECIATED BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN. THE SONG, "IF I SHOULD FALL BEHIND," PUT HIM IN MY TOP FIVE. EACH MEMBER OF THE BAND SINGS A VERSE. IT IS A PHENOMENAL SONG. CLARENCE CLEMONS WAS A GREAT SAX PLAYER. (I'M BIAS. THAT'S WHAT I PLAYED).
6. I LIKE SONGS THAT TELL A STORY. THEY MAY NOT ALWAYS BE THE MOST POPULAR, AND YOU USUALLY CAN'T DANCE TO THEM, BUT I LIKE LYRICS. A PRIME EXAMPLE IS "CHOCOLATE JESUS," BY TOM WAITS. AN UNUSUAL SINGER, SOME PEOPLE WILL THINK I AM NUTS. MAYBE SO, BUT HE SURE AS HELL CAN WRITE A SONG.
7. TO IMMEDIATELY CONTRADICT MYSELF, I AM GOING WITH JOE BONAMASSA AT CARNAGIE HALL, THE SONG "WOKE UP DREAMING." WITH TINA GUO ON CELLO. UNBELIEVABLE. ( A BRAND NEW SONG, NOT OUT YET).
8. LED ZEPPELIN'S "KASHMIR" IS A BEAUTY. I LIKE ROBERT PLANT, ONE OF MY FAVORITE ROCKERS. A GREAT SMOKING SONG. CIGARS.
9. JIMI HENDRIX, "ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER" IS HARD TO BEAT. FROM ARGUABLY THE BEST GUITAR PLAYER EVER.

STALEMATE

Suicide. I've thought about suicide a lot over the years. Professionally, that is. I worked in the field of mental health and substance abuse for 30 years. My first job in mental health was on an emergency response team. I saw someone shot himself in the head. It's one of those things you never forget. Over the years I've wondered about people who kill themselves. I can think of at least 5-6 other suicides during my 30 years. The emptiness they must feel in themselves. The loss of hope that things can get better. The courage they must have. Is it a courageous act? One of desperation? Selfish? Sane? Insane? I don't pretend to understand it, but I do accept it. People have that right, however wrong we might think it to be. In the end, it's you and your life. For better or worse, it always comes down to you, no matter how we'd like to change it, or what we think about it. It is always you. Wrong, cowardly, thoughtless, sinful, whatever words we put to it, none of them are deep enough, or sufficient enough, to meet the emptiness that the person must be feeling. It is a hollow feeling we are left with, filled with sorrow, regret, lose, and the presence of an unfulfilled history. We may not have done what we could have, or said what we should have, but in the end, it was not our life to make or take. Always, in the end, it is your life to live or end. Some thirty-five years after I witnessed that suicide, I still cry at the thought and fumble for the words to describe it. But it was his decision, not mine. I have to live with that. The game ended. There was no winner. Stalemate.

COMPASSION: What is compassion? Feeling sorry for someone? Feeling sorry enough to help them? An emptiness that submerges you when you see others suffering? A burning desire to help others less fortunate than yourself? Is compassion weakness? Is compassion an impossible emotion to find? To develop? Who demonstrates compassion? Where can I see it in action? Is it everywhere? Is it anywhere?

TRUTH: What is the truth? How can you recognize it? Who speaks the truth? Luigi Pirandello wrote: "Truth [is] what we think it is at any given moment of time." Is that right? Is there an ultimate truth? That there is a God, and we are not it? Can the truth set you free? From what? Is the truth only in our minds? There are approximately 350,000.000 minds on Earth. That many truths? We search for the truth. Can it be found? Are there alternative truths? Can fake news be the truth?

DEMOCRACY: We search for democracy. What is it? Freedom of speech? Freedom of the press? Freedom to go where we want? Is democracy possible for humans? Do the citizens control democracy? Must our representatives be elected? What is elected? By whom or what? Freedom of religion? Can I protest if I feel democracy is not being represented by those elected? Do I have a right to ask for explanations? For proof of fact? Can democracy be found or strengthened thru war? Is there such a thing as democracy? Or is it an illusion?

AFGHANISTAN

THE AFGHAN WAR HAS BEEN GONG ON FOR 17 YEARS. WHAT IS IT, EXACTLY, THAT HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED? I SUPPOSE THERE HAS BEEN ANY NUMBER OF GENERALS GETTING THERE 5TH STAR. ASIDE FROM THAT, NOTHING HAS BEEN GAINED. APPROXIMATELY 2250 AMERICAN DEATHS, AND TEN'S OF THOUSANDS INJURED. AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO HEAR WHAT THE MILITARY TELLS THE SURVIVORS OF THE DEAD AND THE INJURED. "YOU WERE BRAVE WARRIORS" WOULD NOT CUT IT IN MY BOOK. PEOPLE LOOK FOR THAT HIGH. WHILE PHYSIOLOGICALLY EXPLAINABLE, A HIGH IS PRETTY MUCH DIFFERENT FOR EVERY ADDICTED PERSON. I SUPPOSE IT'S NOT SO MUCH DIFFERENT AS IT IS THE HIGH IS USED FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES: TO FORGET, TO REMEMBER, TO HAVE ENERGY, TO SETTLE DOWN, TO SLEEP, TO STAY AWAKE, TO HAVE MORE SEX, TO NOT WANTING TO HAVE SEX, TO LOOKING FOR GOD,  OR TRYING TO FORGET. THE REASONS ARE ENDLESS. THIS IS ONE OF THE UNFORTUNATE PROBLEMS. THERE IS AN EASY ANSWER TO ENDING DRUG USE: SIMPLY DON'T USE. BUT THERE IS NO EASY ANSWER TO WHY A PERSON USES IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS COMPLICATES TREATMENT, MAKING IT HARD TO GET AT THE ROOT CAUSES. BUT THAN AGAIN, MAYBE TO QUIT YOU DON'T NEED TO GET AT ROOT CAUSES. MAYBE JUST QUITTING WILL SUFFICE.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS POINTING TO TRUMP BEING MENTALLY ILL

• HIS LOOKS, ALTHOUGH THAT IS NOT AN OFFICIAL SYMPTOM. THAT HAIR-DO IS ANOTHER UNOFFICIAL SIGN, ALONG WITH HIS SPRAY-ON TAN.
• HE OBVIOUSLY HAS A SLEEP DISORDER. HE TWEETS AT ALL TIMES OF THE NIGHT. PRETTY MUCH CRAZY STUFF. LACK OF SLEEP CAN, IN AND OF ITSELF, CAUSE MENTAL HEALTH SYMPTOMS. INCLUDING PSYCHOSIS.
• ERRATIC BEHAVIOR. HE CAN GO FROM RELATIVE NORMALCY TO IRRATIONAL, CONFUSED, THOUGHTS IN A MATTER OF MINUTES.
• HE HAS A CLASSIC NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER.

FAITH

“You got to have faith.” The question would be: In what? Most often, having faith refers to having a belief in God. Faith in God requires a leap into the unknown, the unprovable. There is no 100% certainty.  You either believe or you don’t. There is not much of a halfway point. Taking that leap is difficult for a lot “of people, including myself. You want to dive over the edge like a bungee jumper, but you don’t quite trust it. The cord. The distance. The bounce. Generally speaking, I could use a shove, but that’s not how it works. It’s you who must face the doubt and uncertainty. I try to leap across the chasm in two measured, hesitant leaps, but I always come up short. Faith is a word that has always troubled me. I find it, than lose it; find it, than lose it; find………

I finished two and one-half years of seminary. I recently completed two courses by internet. I have four courses left to complete a master’s degree in theology. I don’t really need a master’s degree in theology for any good reason. I’m 68 years old. I’m past personal accomplishment. And I’m not an ego-maniac. I did it mainly to see if I still could. Was I still searching for God? Maybe. I never really took that leap that Kierkegaard referred to. He actually wrote about a leap to faith. Either way, you got to jump. Into the unknown. The mystic . I’m a contrarion by nature. A stubborn carmodgeon by choice. I do not like to do what the crowd is doing. I don’t trust group-think.  To me it seems best that the mystic seek God from within, rather than from without. A leap is way too dangerous.

Arming everyone with handguns is insane. You say it’s for safety. I say it’s for fear. It does matter.

You preach on and on about the hungry and how terrible it is that children go to bed at night hungry. Yet, have you every handed a hungry child a sandwich? It does matter.

So you are against abortion. After all, your minister thinks it’s sinful. Have you ever talked to a woman about to have an abortion? Have you asked her why? It does matter.

You believe that politician when he says climate change is a bunch of liberal garbage. Did you ask him where he got his information? Or did you ask to see his relevant Ph.D. It does matter.

You think white people are superior to all others.  Can you hear your fathers or mothers voice when you think that? It does matter.

You believe the rich should get all of the governments resources and that the poor are living high-off-the-hog on food stamps and welfare. How about I help you trade places with someone who is down and out. You too can lead the good life. It will matter.

You think the government interfering in our private lives and private talks is a matter of security and safety. Have you given any thought at all in terms of what it means to democracy? It does matter.

We seem to believe it is alright to torture the enemy in the name of freedom and democracy. If so, they can do the same when they catch us. You don’t think it matters, but it does. Endorsing evil always matters.

AND THERE IS NO BETTER ENTICEMENT THAN DRUGS. DRUGS CAN TAKE YOU AWAY FROM YOUR TROUBLES; AWAY FROM THE CHALLENGES; THE PRESSURES; THE FAILURES; THE POVERTY; IN A WAY THAT NOTHING ELSE CAN.
