MY 18TH BIRTHDAY WAS IN APRIL, I SIGNED UP FOR THE DRAFT, SIGNED ON FOR A DEFERRED ENLISTMENT PROGRAM, MY FATHER DIED, I GRADUATED, AND I GOT ENGAGED. MY FATHER DYING ENDED THE ENLISTMENT AND THE ENGAGEMENT. I RECEIVED A HARDSHIP DEFERMENT. THE HARDSHIP DEFERMENT EVENTUALLY ENDED AND I WAS GIVEN A 1A. I WENT TO THE DRAFT CENTER FOR A PHYSICAL SOMETIME IN 1969. THE PROCESS IS RATHER DEMEANING, WHICH IS YOUR INTRODUCTION TO THE SERVICE. THEY TREAT YOU AS THOUGH YOU HAVE ALREADY SIGNED UP. YOU FIRST ARE GIVEN A SHORT TEST, I THINK TO MEASURE WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE ALIVE. THERE WERE SOME MECHANICAL QUESTIONS WHICH I MISSED. (ENDS UP, I'M MECHANICALLY CHALLENGED). HE KICKED ME OUT OF THE CENTER. INTERESTING PUNISHMENT. WAITING TO BE CALLED TO DUTY, I SUDDENLY FOUND RELIGION AND WAS ACCEPTED INTO SEMINARY, WHICH CARRIED WITH IT A 4D DEFERMENT. WHAT CAN I SAY? GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS. AFTER 2 YRS. IN SEMINARY, I APPLIED FOR AND RECEIVED CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR STATUS. THE SERIES IS SCORED BY TRENT REZNOR, FROM NINE INCH NAILS, AND ATTICUS ROSS, PRODUCER, SONGWRITER, AND NOW MEMBER OF NINE INCH NAILS. THE EARLY EPISODES INVOLVED MAINLY THE HISTORY OF VIETNAM, WHICH WAS ENLIGHTENING. I HAD NEVER HEARD MUCH ABOUT THE FRENCH HAVING COLONIZED VIETNAM. IT PROVED THOROUGHLY DISGUSTING, AND SHOULD HAVE ACTED AS A WARNING FOR U.S. INVOLVEMENT. BUT OF COURSE, WE DIDN'T PAY ANY ATTENTION. SEEMS WE THINK WE ARE ALWAYS RIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO WAR.      1. THE DOMINO THEORY WAS A FARCE, PERPETRATED BY THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT.
     2. ALMOST EVERYONE, DOWN TO THE PRESIDENTS AND SECRETARY OF STATE'S INVOLVED OVER THE YEARS, STATED PRIVATELY THAT WE COULDN'T WIN THE WAR. THEY REPEATEDLY LIED TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC.
     3. GEN. WESTMORELAND DID THE COUNTRY A GREAT INJUSTICE. HE REPEATEDLY CALLED FOR MORE MEN TO FIGHT A WAR HE DID NOT THINK WE COULD WIN. HE IN FACT WAS BAFFLED BY THE WHOLE THING.
     4. NONE OF OUR MAJOR ALLIES WANTED ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE WAR. WHEN YOU SEE THAT HAPPENING, YOU CAN BET YOU ARE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE COIN.

69 YEARS OLD

• I'm 69 years old and I still haven't run for the Presidency. I don't really want the job, which is why I would probably be pretty good at it. I wouldn't put up with any shit. If someone said let's go to war, I'd fire them. If someone said let's give the rich a tax break, I'd fire them. This would help the unemployment, cause I would then hire people with brains. Anyone mentioning doing away or cutting social security and medicare would be eligible for life in prison. Social programs for struggling people would be in, welfare for the corporate farmers and rich CEO's would be out. I would declare universal health-care a human right, and I wouldn't mess around with Congress, who are bought by the health-care industry. It would be a Presidential mandate. I probably wouldn't be very electable, but man, would I have fun debating these morons.
• I'm 69, but I don't feel that old. I feel about 25. Well, in the morning I feel a little older, but once I'm up, find my pants and a shirt and some shoes, have a cup of coffee, play golf, take a nap, and eat dinner, I figure someone made a mistake on my birth certificate. Long about 8pm, I head to bed. I take my meds and figure I'm probably 69 after all. They say it's all in the mind. Yea. you bet.
• Sixty-nine isn't all that old anymore. They say it's the new middle age. "They", of course, don't know what the hell they are talking about. "They" ain't ever been 69. The average age for males to survive is now 75. That's only six more years. I think I'm going to go back to church. I need to start cramming for finals.
• When I think back over 69 years, it seems to have passed so quickly. I remember my first day of school. My buddy was suppose to stop by and take me, but he forgot. That first kiss, which I ain't going to say much about, cause it wasn't my wife. All the baseball and basketball memories. College, seminary, graduate school. Forty-five years of marriage, two kids, ten dogs, and four different homes. It's all still up there, in my mind. Fortunately, I can still remember all of it. The good, the bad, and the ugly. It's all right there. All-in-all, I can't complain. It's been a good life. And I'm hoping to beat that 75. I still got a lot of things to do, like learning how to speak "Mexican"  (Bush Jr.) and figuring out what the hell a square root is. In the end, I'm only hoping for one thing: that people can say "He was a good man." That will do.

THE DREAMING TREE MUST LIVE

• THEY SAY THE DREAMING TREE IS DYING, BUT I DON'T THINK SO.
• THEY WANT THE POOR TO SUFFER. THEY WANT TO PRESS US DOWN UNTIL WE CAN'T GET UP. BUT THAT AIN'T GOING TO HAPPEN. IN LARGER AND LARGER NUMBERS, WE ARE TAKING TO THE STREETS, DEMANDING JUSTICE AND ECONOMIC EQUALITY. THERE IS NO TURNING US BACK, EVEN IF YOU MAKE ROBOTS OUT OF OUR POLICE. WE WILL DEMAND THEY PROTECT US, NOT YOU.
• THEY WANT US TO DIE AND GET OUT OF THE WAY, RATHER THAN TO RECEIVE TREATMENT. BUT WE ARE HEALING OURSELVES AND EACH OTHER. WE WILL NOT BE DENIED.
• THEY DON'T CARE IF WE HAVE A HOME. THEY HAVE THEIRS, WITH EVER INCREASING SQUARE FOOTAGE AND FOUR CAR GARAGES. BUT WE WILL SURVIVE, AS THEIR PALACES COME CRASHING DOWN UNDER THE WEIGHT OF THEIR GREED. 
• THEY FILL THEIR PRISONS WITH EVER INCREASING NUMBERS, MORE AND MORE FREQUENTLY TO PROVIDE CHEAP LABOR FOR CORRUPT CORPORATIONS. BUT THE WALLS WILL NOT DETER US. THEY CANNOT IMPRISON OUR SOULS AND CAN NEVER TAKE AWAY THE FREEDOM OF OUR MINDS.
• THEY WANT MORE AND MORE, EVEN AFTER THEIR BILLIONS. NOTHING FILLS THEIR APPETITE FOR PROFIT. BUT WE WILL SURVIVE AND PROSPER, EVEN WITH THEIR GREED AND UNJUST LAWS.
• THEIR THIRST FOR PROFIT DENIES SCIENCE AND TRUTH. BUT TRUST CANNOT BE CHALLENGED BY "FAKE SCIENCE." INTELLIGENCE CANNOT BE OVERCOME BY IGNORANCE. 
• THEY WILL DISAPPEAR INTO THE DARKNESS OF NIGHT AND WE WILL PREVAIL. GOODNESS WILL NOT SUCCUMB TO BAD. NOR TRUTH TO LIES. LOVE WILL RISE UP AND COVER HATE. THE DREAM WILL NOT DIE BECAUSE OF ONE MAN AND HIS THIRST FOR POWER. HE AND HIS HATEFUL, RACIST FOLLOWERS WILL BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE. BAD NEVER GOES AWAY, BUT IT CAN BE SMOTHERED WITH KINDNESS AND LOVE AND CARING FOR EACH OTHER.

• DRIVE DEFENSIVELY. DON'T TRUST THE OTHER GUY. PEOPLE HAVE A HABIT OF DOING SOME VERY UNUSUAL THINGS. BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST.
• THE RIDE CAN BE LONG, BUMPY, AND DANGEROUS, BUT ENDS UP BEING WELL WORTH IT. DON'T SACRIFICE QUANTITY FOR QUALITY. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND DON'T LET ANYONE TELL YOU YOU'RE NOT WORTH THE TRIP. YOU ARE.
