Welcome to the new tax law

The best investment Warren Buffett made this year was in Trump. The corporate rate went from 35% to 21, netting Berkshire Hathaway $29 billion. During the Eisenhower presidency, the corporate rate was 50%. Eisenhower warned us about the military-industrial complex. The military takes about 55% of our tax dollars. Ike was right. • I’m in Florida this week. The major topic is guns. What a mess. Our major thoughts and energy should be on throwing Trump out of office. While we are distracted, he and his boys will pass countless legislation designed to make us poorer and he and his lackeys richer.
• A lot of companies are dropping their discounts for NRA members. I’m disgusted they had them in the first place.
• I have advocated in the past putting the NRA on the terrorist watch list. After listening to their president and spokeswoman this past week, I believe I am right.
• I do see a glimmer of hope in all of this. God has spoken to me and She firmly believes the only guns we should possess are B.B. guns. She did, however, issue us a warning: Don’t shoot your eye out.

The gun debate is hard to stomach. I just can hardly believe it. The upside is hopefully the kids will start a revolution. It’s usually students stuck with that job. Adults are not good at change. Too lnvested on the way things are. Arm teachers? Great solution. Put guns in the schools, rather than keeping them out. Get rid of kits to change semi-automatic weapons to automatic. PRIVATE CLUB VS MUNICIPALITY: Hot Springs Village is a private club. As such, we are not bound by municipal, country or state rule. We can, within reason, pretty much make whatever rules we want to govern ourselves. The recent court decision regarding a two tiered system and our charter, attests to that fact. The court is not interested in a bunch of mainly white folks haggling over money. Democratic rule is not important in a private club. It’s sort of what you would say is a free-for-all. The manager and director’s make the rules, and we follow them. Oh, we have to posthumously agree, but hardly anyone pays much attention. We wrongly assume they are making up these things in our best interest. In doing so, we have moved to a nationalistic, militaristic rule. The POA does not believe they need the member’s advice and/or approval in making most of their decisions. They can, and do, ask our opinions in surveys, but seldom follow the results. They usually have their minds made-up before asking our input. I personally believe this style of leadership has evolved from military influence by our board President’s over the last years. Military leadership is not the place to go looking for democratic leadership,. It is pretty much, “Do as I say, and don’t talk back.” That seems to sum up the POA over the 12 years we have owned property in the Village. Continuing this type of leadership will move us towards becoming a municipality. I have mixed emotions about becoming a municipality, but have no hesitancy at all about demanding democratic, representative rule. I’m not into country clubs. As for the coming election, it looks like more of the same. Radically different approaches to leadership are not welcome. In fact, usually heavily frowned upon.

I looked over the summary of our first ever Candidate Orientation Session. I was unable to attend, which probably helped my mental health. The whole thing looked like a military induction ceremony. It’s  scary when you look at this stuff. “Although board members are elected to serve on the Board of Directors, a homeowners association is not a representative form of government.” (handout). So much for fairness and democracy. “It does mean that favoring a minority interest over the interests of the association as a whole can get a director into trouble.” (handout). Please salute and praise us for our judgement and decisions. I particularly like this: “Open, vigorous discussions about key issues should be encouraged. A board that passes every resolution ‘unanimously’ should evaluate whether it needs to do more to encourage a thoughtful and open discussion.”(handout). Seems we are often called upon to give our opinions after the directors have made up their minds. I came to understand this serving on the recreation committee. Nod your head yes and don’t raise any uncomfortable questions. And a final strike against democratic rule: “Every board’s motto should be “what happens in the boardroom stays in the boardroom…Once an issue is settled by the board vote, the board members who voted against the majority must present a united front.” (handout). Nationalistic. Militaristic. Putting the “POA” ahead of the individuals that make it up.  Getting board members in line before they become board members. The whole thing makes me relatively certain that we should become a municipality, to help insure democratic rule. The whole idea of demanding more loyalty from a director than he or she gives to the citizen is a daunting proposition. A dangerous one. Disheartening.
