People over POA. That’s what we all, well, almost all, of us think. I would not think of Hot Springs Village as a corporation. I don’t believe we are stockholders. I believe we are a community. We should be using municipal rules. Instead, we have, I don’t know exactly what. “Although board members are elected to serve on the board of director’s, a homeowners association is not a representative form of government.” That was from a handout at the board orientation. Another: “It does mean that favoring a minority interest over the interests of the association as a whole can get a director into trouble.” (We saw this first-hand with Mermel being reprimanded by the board president).

To further support this crazy notion that we are a corporation, listen to the manager and president: “The time for dissent is before a vote. After a board vote, members should accept the results and work as one. Once the board has spoken, the board has spoken.”(manager). “You can have an opposing viewpoint, but we hope it is not taken to an extreme.” (president). This doesn’t strike me as democratic. Democracy requires dissent. To squelch that in any way is to move away from a citizen oriented form of government. Yes, dissent makes life hard for the leadership, but that’s how it should be.

Our leadership needs to be reprimanded, which the election has seemingly done. I have no idea what the new director’s will do. Hopefully, they will challenge this notion that we are a corporation vs community. Hopefully, they will suggest that we need to adopt municipal rules. Hopefully, they will make our governing more transparent. Hopefully, they will bring it from behind closed doors.

This whole notion should scare you. Or better, make you mad. People over POA.

I find strength in seeing these kids lead the way against gun violence. As adults, we have failed miserably. What a beautiful thing. I hope they are ready for it. They will have to endure terrible hardships, perpetrated by the NRA and the press and the Trump administration. God be with them. She hates guns.

HOW CAN A POOR MAN STAND THIS TIME AND LIVE?

For people who are struggling, this is a bad time. A depressing time. A time lacking compassion. Justice. Equality. Trump and all of Washington have betrayed our trust and no longer serve as public servants, sworn to uphold our right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” as stated in the Declaration of Independence. They have all become doorkeepers for the rich. Gate keepers at the country club. Servants pandering to the needs of their owners, who buy them with their billions; allow them to serve as long as they please; hire them later to become lobbyists; and when they die, proclaim them as heroes and saviors of democracy and capitalism. It is an odd perversion of democratic government.

On turning seventy: I haven’t been a great world traveler. Most of my exploring has been done within my mind. I’ve wondered a lot about what my place in the world is. How it is that I think the way I do. I ask a lot of questions about religion. Some days, God doesn’t make any sense. Day’s when young kids get shot. Or someone is tortured for no good reason. I wonder why our leaders are so inflicted with “me-ism.” In my mind, I can journey to a place where there are no guns. Where politicians are more interested in the common good than they are in practicing “me-ism.” I can see everyone with the healthcare they need. A place where all can find shelter in warmth and security. People not killing one another in the name of peace and democracy. Where your skin color doesn’t matter; your religion doesn’t matter; your sexual preference doesn’t matter; your sex doesn’t matter; your country of origin doesn’t matter. Only you and the other matters. I can get to these places in my mind, regardless of the obstacles. I don’t have a lot of need for travel.

And I don’t have a lot of things on a bucket list. For my 70^th birthday, I’m going to get a tattoo because I think they are neat. And Ann and I are going to Cuba. I’m going on a study tour to learn about revolution. Short of that, I’ve pretty much done what I need to do. When you almost die at age 52, you come to understand that you had better not wait too long to do what it is you need to. Oh, I have plenty of room to be a better person. A better husband. A better father. A better citizen.  A better friend. You never get to where you want to be with those things. That bucket never gets full. So for being 70 on April 4, I’m ready. Maybe something will come up for 71. I hope I’ll be around to let you know.

I saw this lady who looked really old. She was struggling, but she was out in bad weather taking care of business. She was shaky and looked as fragile as porcelain. She made me think about my own life; times when I complain about being stiff, or having to take all those damn pills. Looking at her, I felt embarrassed to even think I had it bad. Poor me needed to ask her how her life was, how it had been when she was young. The things she had seen. About people she has loved and been loved by. Poor me didn’t have the time to do it, and I cheated my existence because of it.
